"Giving is Living"
Generosity of spirit has taken me a long time to fully grasp. I knew giving to others was obviously important - but I would always put it off thinking I needed to have more money, more time, and work on myself first. That's before I picked up a book called "Tuesday's with Morrie." I got it at Barnes & Noble on 5th Ave. while visiting New York City. On my favorite morning there, I was greeted with delicate snowflakes showering the city. I got off the subway and enjoyed walking around with no destination in mind. Peering through shops and admiring dogs passing by with their owners - the city immediately felt small and quaint. It was as if were all in this together, inside this freshly shaken snow globe. The cold started biting at my nose so I popped into a coffee shop off 69th & Lexington. I ordered a skinny latte and cozied into my new book. I sat there for what seems like hours, sipping my warm drink, watching fellow snow globe friends pass, and page after page having my soul opened more deeply. The words of the dying have such a powerful perspective. Sitting in that coffee shop, my thoughts shifted from "I'll give when I have more to give" to "What could I give now with what I have to give?"
I have the ability to call someone to tell them I care, I could give 2 hours a week to that local cause I've always believed in, I can part with the crumpled up dollars in my pocket to give the hungry person I just walked by, I can tip a little bigger, I can give free smiles, I can close down all the distractions at the end of my day and give the gift of my attention. Giving doesn't require anything more than an open heart. Be open to all the ways you can give. You will be surprised how this single shift in you can bring such goodness into your life. As Morrie says in the book, "giving is living." If you're not giving to others then the world is missing out on you. . . and you are missing out on leaving your mark on the world. I say, let's leave it better than we came.
I challenge you to think about one way you could be more giving, starting today.
